This month’s object is the splendid Victoria Cross
brooch on display in the Museum which once belonged to
Mrs Woodroffe, the mother of 2nd Lieutenant Sidney
Woodroffe of The Rifle Brigade, aged 19, who was awarded
a posthumous VC

MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL AWARDED TO REVEREND H.
J. SYMONS This month’s object is the Military
General Service Medal (1793-1814) with four clasps
awarded to the Reverend H. J. Symons who, after
Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore was mortally wounded
at the battle of Corunna on 16 January 1809, officiated
at his burial service at 8 a.m. on the following day.

PAINTING OF THE RIFLE BRIGADE BY THOMAS BAINES
This month’s object is one of five paintings by Thomas
Baines (1820-75) of scenes relating to the activities of
the 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, en route to and
during the Third Kaffir War in the Cape Colony (South
Africa) in 1852. This particular painting bears the
title ‘Landing in Surf at Algoa Bay, Cape of Good Hope,

THE OMDURMAN GUNS This month’s object, or to be more exact, objects are
the two field guns that guard the entrance to the Museum
at Winchester. They were captured by 2nd Battalion, The
Rifle Brigade, during the Battle of Omdurman on 2
September 1898.

LT- GEN SIR WALTER CONGREVE'S FALSE ARM This month’s rather unusual object is the false arm used
by Lieutenant-General Sir Walter Congreve VC KCB MVO
(The Rifle Brigade) to replace his left hand which was
amputated after he was wounded at Vimy Ridge on the
Western Front in France in June 1917.

SILVER MATCHBOX HOLDER WITH KRRC CREST ON TOPSIDE
This month’s object is a silver matchbox holder with a
King’s Royal Rifle Corps crest on the topside which
belonged to Lieutenant-Colonel R G Buchanan-Riddell, who
was killed during the South African War by a sniper
after successfully leading 3rd Battalion KRRC in a
successful assault on the Boer positions at Twin Peaks
on 24 January 1900.

WILKINSON
This month’s object is a silver communion set used by
the Reverend Lumley Green-Wilkinson when he was chaplain
to the 41st Infantry Brigade in the 14th (Light)
Division during the Division’s occupation of the trench
line in the Ypres salient in mid-1915.

GAS DETECTING AND OTHER CARTOONS BY MAJOR IAN FENWICK
KRRC
This cartoon is one of over fifty in the Museum
collection drawn by Major Ian Fenwick of The King’s
Royal Rifle Corps who was killed in action behind enemy
lines near Orléans, France, on 7 August 1944 while
commanding D Squadron, 1st Special Air Service Regiment.

THE BELLOW PIPES OF THE 'HIGHLAND COMAPANY' OF 1ST
BATTALION 95TH RIFLES
This month’s object is one of the more unusual on
display in the Museum: the bellow pipes of the ‘Highland
Company’ of the 1st Battalion, 95th Rifles (later The
Rifle Brigade), commanded during the first half of the
Peninsular War by Captain Alexander Cameron.

GENERAL WOLFES WRITING CASE The writing case
featured as this month’s object is reputed to have
belonged to Major-General James Wolfe and was used by
him in Canada before he was mortally wounded during the
British victory over the French at the Battle of Quebec
on 13 September 1759.

PDSA DICKIN MEDAL AWARDED IN 1949 TO 'TICH' A
BLACK MONGREL TERRIER
This month’s object features the PDSA Dickin Medal
awarded in 1949 to a black Egyptian mongrel bitch
terrier called ‘Tich’ for loyalty, courage and devotion
to duty under hazardous conditions of war between 1941
and 1945 while serving with 1st Battalion, The King’s
Royal Rifle Corps (1 KRRC), in North Africa and Italy.
It is the only Dickin Medal owned by the Museum.

SIR JOHN MOORE'S GOLD CROSS
The gold cross chosen as this month’s object of the
month belonged to Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore.
After his death at the Battle of Corunna on 16 January
1809 it passed into the ownership of his sister, Jane
Moore, who later gave it to Mrs A. Yonge of Puslinch.
The Yonge family have retained possession of it ever
since. The cross is presently on loan to the Museum and
is on display together with other items once belonging
to Sir John Moore.

THE HOOF OF COALBOX - A GERMAN PONY
This month’s object is one of the four hooves of ‘Coal
Box’, a German pony befriended by bandsmen of the 2nd
Battalion, The King’s Royal Rifle Corps (2 KRRC), during
the First World War. The hoof, which is on display in
the Museum, is silver plated and engraved with the words
‘Coal Box 1914-1920’ .

ROYAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY (RGS) FOUNDERS GOLD MEDAL
This month’s object is the only example of a Royal
Geographical Society (RGS) Founder’s Gold Medal owned by
and on display in the Museum. It was awarded to
Lieutenant Boyd Alexander of The Rifle Brigade in 1908
“for his three years’ journey across Africa from the
Niger to the Nile” between 1904 and 1907.

reminder that Christmas has always been of
special significance for troops on operations
overseas and an opportunity for those at home to
show their appreciation and remind the troops
with cards and ‘goodies’ that they are not

WATERCOLOURS OF LT THE HON H H CLIFFORD VC
This month’s object is one of
19 exquisite watercolours in the Museum’s
collection painted by Lieutenant the Hon. H.H.
Clifford of The Rifle Brigade, who was awarded a
Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the
Crimean War (1854-6). This particular
watercolour is of a Rifleman in The Rifle
Brigade looking as he no doubt looked most
probably during the siege of Sebastopol.

MODEL OF COAL FIRED 0-6-0 TANK ENGINE
An unusual object for a military museum this
coal-fired 0-6-0 tank engine (locomotive) was built by
Mr Tom Moore of Stradbroke in Suffolk and named by him
Frank Moore in memory of his eldest brother,
6847925 Rifleman Frank Moore, who was killed in
action north of Ravenna in Italy on 22 January 1945
while serving with the 1st Battalion, The King’s Royal
Rifle Corps.

2ND LT JOHN CHENEY'S WORLD WAR 1 HELMET WITH
GERMAN SNIPER'S BULLET HOLE
A World War 1 helmet worn by
2nd Lieutenant John Cheney of the 2nd Battalion, The
King’s Royal Rifle Corps, when he was hit in the head by
a sniper’s bullet during the fighting in France in 1918.
Careful examination reveals that the bullet penetrated
2nd Lieutenant Cheney’s helmet at the hairline above his
right temple.
